Tell us a bit about yourself and your business, i.e. what made you want to start your own business and how did you get there?
I came from a background in fine dining working overseas but after I came back to the UK, the hours
didn’t suit having a young family so I decided to branch out on my own. And so Mama Sue’s was born! My mum, step-mum and mother in law are all called Sue so the name was an easy one.
I started doing small markets plus a couple of word of mouth events and it took off from there.
Which women have been your biggest inspiration and helped you to succeed?
My inspirations are all my friends and family who I see juggling their careers, own businesses, family and home life whilst generally being fabulous, very very funny and still properly interesting company. I’ve also discovered lots of like-minded women on Instagram and through events who are doing a splendid job.
.
What tips would you give to other women who want to start their own business?
Start small and build. It can feel like a mountain to achieve before you get going but get yourself up to spec legally and get going. You can sort out the finer details as you go. Not everything has to be perfect at the beginning. I’m seven years in and things still aren’t!
If you could choose to be any woman from any film, who would you choose?
I’m not ashamed to say I have a big lady-crush on Erin Brockovich! Breezing through with a plan, winding people up, making mistakes but just massively smashing it. Either that or Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday. Just for a day.
